In an increasingly turbulent Chicago, the FBI warns once waring gangs could be uniting to kill police officers in the process of arresting suspects in order to gain media attention.
According to ABC7, “a federal intelligence alert obtained by the ABC7 I-Team has gone out to Chicago-area law enforcement with an ominous warning: nearly three dozen cold-blooded street gangs ‘have formed a pact to ‘shoot on-sight any cop that has a weapon drawn on any subject in public’.”
Ominously titled “Pact Made by People Nation Gang Factions to ‘Shoot On-Sight’ Any Police Officer with a Weapon Drawn,” the report includes a list of infamous gangs who’ve signed on, including the Latin Kings, Vice Lords, El Rukns, and Black P Stones.
The report added, “members of these gang factions have been actively searching for, and filming, police officers in performance of their official duties. The purpose of which is to catch on film an officer drawing his/her weapon on any subject and the subsequent ‘shoot on-sight’ of said officer, in order to garner national media attention.”
While the FBI could not verify the credibility of the individual who brought this alliance to their attention, they are treating it with the utmost seriousness. The information likely “came from a police street source, a cooperating witness in an ongoing case, or from discussions overheard on a wiretap or other surveillance recording.” The Chicago PD is aware of this new threat and is taking action to protect their officers.
Earlier this week after two officers were shot during a routine stop, Chicago’s police superintendent David Brown told reporters he believes criminals are actively targeting police. This year, 41 officers have been shot at and 10 have been shot.
“I think it’s more than a suggestion,” Brown said at the assertion that criminals have been targeting law enforcement. “Fifty-one officers being shot at or shot in one year? I think that quadruples any previous year in Chicago’s history.”
Brown also said violent criminals in general have “acted with impunity much more than we’ve seen in the past.” Strained police resources have been mostly powerless in controlling riots and looting branching off from Black Lives Matter protests in America’s major cities.
“Whether they’re associated with a gang or not we’ve seen increasing violence throughout,” Brown continued. “Shooting babies and kids with impunity with no regard for innocent bystanders. So I wouldn’t say that it’s associated with a specific, whether it’s a gang or culture, I think overall there’s this sense of lawlessness.”
“We just can’t let our guard down for a moment,” he said. “Our strategy is to be prepared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
This comes as a sudden crime wave afflicts major cities across the country, Chicago notwithstanding. According to the Daily Mail, “stark CPD data reveals murders have rocketed 52 percent from 333 between January 1 and August 30 2019 to 505 for the same period this year.” The outlet added, “a staggering 2,152 shootings have taken place so far in 2020 – 739 more than the 1,413 that had taken place by this time last year.”
