Armed Heroes of the Poway Synagogue Shooting Prevent an even Worse Tragedy

As the bullets were flying through the halls of the Poway Synagogue, an absolute tragedy and act of unrivaled evil, two men stood up to the monster who had killed one and injured three others, including the Rabbi who lost a finger from the ordeal and a 60-year old woman who reportedly took the bullet for the Rabbi.

The shooter, who will remain nameless, had reportedly dropped his rifle when he saw Oscar Stewart, 51, a Navy and Army veteran, bravely and instinctively rushing him. According to his wife and other witnesses, Stewart told fellow worshipers to “get down,” as he shouted at the shooter; “you motherfucker! I’m going to kill you!”

Oscar Stewart talking to reporters after the tragedy

This prompted the shooter to flee, after dropping his rifle at the sight of Stewart and his enraged charge, according to the Daily Caller, who had been in contact with Stewart after the incident.

“I knew I had to be within five feet of this guy so his rifle couldn’t get to me,” Stewart said. “So I ran immediately toward him, and I yelled as loud as I could. And he was scared. I scared the hell out of him.”

“I heard gunshots,” Stewart said. “And everybody got up and started trying to get out the back door, so I — for whatever reason — I didn’t do that. I ran the other way. I ran towards the gun shots.”

“When I came around the corner into the lobby area, I saw the individual with a gun, and he fired two rounds. And I yelled at him and I must have yelled very loud, and he looked at me, and I must have had a really mean look on my face or something, because he immediately dropped his weapon and turned and ran. And then I gave chase.”

Stewart told The Daily Caller in an interview

After chasing the gunman out of the synagogue and into the parking lot, the gunman locked himself in his car while Stewart began pounding on the door in an attempt to drag the shooting out.

At this time, an off-duty border patrol agent, who also regularly attends prayer sessions at the synagogue, came to assist Stewart. The unnamed border patrol agent was armed and ready to use his weapon to stop further bloodshed. “The agent fired several rounds into the lower part of the vehicle, intending to disable it, but the shooter managed to drive away.” While the shooter escaped, the two were able to record his license plate number and called the authorities.

Stewart told the Daily Caller “it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun.” As it is evident, this horrible tragedy could have been far worse, rivaling one of the other mass shootings at a place of worship, if it were not for the brave actions of Stewart and the armed assistance by the Border Patrol agent. If Stewart himself was armed then some damage might have been prevented. Without his bravery, the shooter’s rampage might’ve continued.

Stewart attributes social media and the “increasingly disconnected world we find ourselves in” for the tragedy, not the President like many media personalities. He offers a message of unity, and wants people to come together, not divide alone partisan lines.

In the wake of a horror nobody should experience, we see people will still stick up for one another, risking life and limb to keep each other safe. While evil people exist, heroes are there to fight hate. Light always trump darkness.
